Personal Statement
Throughout my adult working life I have consistently sought out challenging occupations that allow me to exercise a social conscience. I worked for a number of years with Children and Families Services, have written, developed and implemented services to support victims of domestic abuse, adult education programmes, and, formative to my current occupation, brain injury rehabilitation services. It was during this employment that I first began to appreciate that patient outcomes were strongly affected by the early stages of care, and began to consider the merits of the pre-hospital clinician. My occupational history is one of responsible decision making in dynamic roles responding to fluctuating demands and priorities.
This year I have commenced a Paramedic Practice diploma of higher education, the successful completion of which will allow me to register and operate as a Paramedic. I receive contact time with university based lecturers and clinical practitioners, work based mentoring and assessment, and guidance on resources to complement self-guided study. I am well organised and dedicated in my own learning, and I embrace opportunities to learn and inform my practice. This will help me to meet the demands of my higher education and the commitment to self-guided learning required by my employers and the regulating body, the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
My professional development portfolio will show that my practice meets the professional standards of the HCPC. My evidence will include my occupational personal development plan, reflections on my role performance, event attendance and further study to demonstrate my fulfilment of the clinical and professional standards of my employer and of the HCPC. It utilises, among other sources, the continuing professional development (CPD) guidance provided by the College of Paramedics (CoP). I will further evidence that my continuing development benefits my clinical practice and improves the experiences and outcomes of my patients.
I am passionate about my role, for public service, and for the development of the concept of pre-hospital clinical role. My commitment to improving patient well-being gives me a strong foundation for the expansion of my skill set and scope of practice through continuous learning, development and reflection. I am interested in developing my role through higher education, and upon registration I will have greater capacity to provide effective patient care with greater skills and autonomy in my operational response.
